Introduction

At this page, we have a closer look at terms, which you will see often,
if you're using a Dreambox.

Automount:

This is a config file where you can enter your external devices, which should be connected with your Dreambox. If you boot your dreambox or want to access a device, each device you've entered into that file will be mountet automatically. In some images this file is named "automount.conf", in others "auto.hotplug". Maybe other in other images is used another different name, or that funktion may not be available.

Dreambox-Images:

An image is an exact copy of the operating system of each Drembox. For every type of Dreambox is a own image available, which must not be flashed in other types, as it was developed for. There is a hole number of different images for each box. Not only because of different Boxtypes, but also because of different Board-Teams and single persons. The untouched images are called "CVS-images" or "OE-Images". Each oter image has its own name, eg. "Gemini".

Secondstage:

The Secondstage-Loader is part of the bootloader of all OE-Boxes (currently 500+, 600, 7020, 7025, 7025+, 800 und 8000). If you stop the Box in secondstage, it offers you a webinterface, where among others it can be flashed.

SAMBA:

is a free software which makes the [1] available on Unix machines. [2] is capable to take over typical functions, as eg. file- and printservices like a Windows server and lets you share your files and directories in your home network. The Samba Server offers directories (eg. the content of the harddisk). The Samba Client can access to directories and files, offered on a server (Dreambox, PC). Samba is always in use, if you want to connect Linux to windows devices.

NFS:


(Network File System) is a stable and well working network-protocoll, delveloped by Sun, to share files in your local network (it would also work over the internet, but is not recommendable because of security aspects). NFS is like the opposite to CIFS (Samba). It's used to connect linux dveices with linux devices.

CIFS:

Common Internet File System (short CIFS) is a filesystem, invented by Microsoft. It describes an extended version of SMB. CIFS is building on NetBios over TcpIp and SMB, and offers in addition to file- and printer sharing further services as eg. the Windows RPC and the NT-Domain Service. Samba allows you to connect to CIFS resources.

Webif:

As webbroser-interface we call a HTTP connection to a device or software. With a webbrowser as eg. FireFox we can access directly the IP of the Dreambox and do a couple of configurations. If we enter a port address, we can also access programs (eg. softcams). For the Gemini2 images the is the FireFox addon GP2-Controlr for easier access available.

Mount:

Flash a Box:

To flash means to put a new image on the Dreambox. If you flash your Box, you put a new operating system on in.
